You know the drill. It’s the anniversary of not the worst maritime disaster in terms of loss of life, but the most famous. Posts like this pop up once a year on the anniversary of and I really don’t want to regurgitate the same old ‘what-ifs’. But despite this, it has also come to my attention, with my last post about the ‘what-ifs’ surrounding the death of Kurt Cobain, that a few of you may not have heard the alternative theories about the sinking of the “RMS Titanic”. I write the name of the ship in quotations because that is the main theory. That it wasn’t really the Titanic that sank that cold frigid April night into the depths of the icy Atlantic, but rather its sister ship, the Olympic. So it is for those of you who do NOT know about maybe the largest slight-of-hand and insurance scam of all time. For those of you who DO know of such suspicions, just think of my regurgitation of these thoughts as a mamma bird feeding her young. Is that a good metaphor? Too late now, I already found a picture.

mother-awkbirdKnowledge is the colors of the rainbow…

This has the potential to be an extremely long post which, let’s face it, neither one of us has time for. So let’s get down to it. It all starts off the Isle of Wight on the Olympic’s fifth voyage where the Olympic was running parallel with a British Warship, the HMS Hawke. The Olympic turned starboard into the Hawke and given how large the Olympic was, had a large turning radius which meant the commander of the Hawke didn’t have time to make the appropriate evasive maneuvers. The end result looked like this.

800px-Hawke_-_Olympic_collisionLeft: The damage done to the Olympic. Right: Me the morning after St. Patrick’s Day.

What came after the incident was and inquiry done by the Royal Navy which ruled unsurprisingly, that the fault lie with the Olympic and therefore, the White Star Line, the company that owned the Olympic and its sister ships, the RMS Titanic and the HMHS Britannic, was responsible for monetary restitution to the Royal Navy for the damages caused by the collision. This was supposedly very bad for the White Star Line as repairs had to be made to the Olympic which took her out of the water and not making money. On top of all this, the Olympic was apparently not insured. A fact that I have not been able to confirm but it would seem all sources say that it wasn’t. The Titanic, however, was.

The two sister ships were almost completely identical aside from a few subtle differences. Differences that would seem to have vanished by the time of the maiden voyage of the Titanic. A couple of them are:

  • On the forward part of C deck, the Olympic was built with fourteen portholes. The Titanic was built with sixteen. After their last time together, the Olympic had acquired the extra two portholes her sister had.
  • Also at the time of its launch, the Titanic had evenly spaced windows on B deck and again at the time of her maiden voyage, they had taken on an uneven appearance.

And those two differences, besides the Titanic just slightly larger than the Olympic, not in length, height or width, but by gross tonnage, are the only structural differences between the two ships. Both of which seemingly changed before her maiden voyage. The other things that separated the two ships were their names painted on their sides, the names of the ships on the lifeboats and the letterheads and menus their ships namesakes. All things that could be switched within a weekend period. And according to this theory, they were.

The switch would have occurred in Belfast at the Thompson dry dock where both ships were often birthed side by side. One ship would go in after the other went out especially during repairs done to the Olympic. So there you have it. That’s the gist of the conspiracy. The two ships were swapped so that the mother company would avoid bankruptcy. I say “gist’ because there are a lot of other factors and theories that I didn’t go over, and again, in the interest of keeping your attention, I won’t. I will however provide links to some of them and the end of this post if you are so inclined to take a leap down some dark rabbit holes. But, I will go over some of the data that suggests that this might have actually taken place. Actually, no. I’ll just go over one. The one that made me cock my head to the side and utter under my breath, “Whaaattt…..”

The Smoking Gun

smoking-gun1This is what that phrase means right?

So after the collision with the Hawke, the Olympic suffered heavy damage to its starboard side propeller shaft in which parts already fitted for the Titanic were used for repair. After that, in February of 1912, the Olympic hit a submerged object in the Atlantic while leaving New York losing a propeller blade. She once again had to return to Belfast and once again parts from the Titanic were used to repair the damage. The ship number for the Olympic was 400 and the number for the Titanic was 401. All parts for each ship was numbered accordingly with their respective ship’s number. So now we have a propeller shaft and propeller with the Titanic’s ship number, 401, on the Olympic. Why is this important? Because when we did find the wreck of the ship known as the Titanic, it did indeed have the Titanic’s parts numbers on the propeller. Now I know what you’re thinking, okay… I don’t. But I can tell you what I was thinking when first I heard that little tid-bit of information. It was something along the lines of, “Whaaattt…” But we know that the Olympic had the propeller with that number. So what gives? Did we blow the lid off this conspiracy? Was this the greatest insurance scam of all time? Move along folks. Nothing to see here. Go ahead and get your red ink ready and stamp this solved.

SolvedStampThat seemed easier than I thought it was going to be…

Head in HandsI should have seen this coming… Especially since I’m the one writing this…

Yes, while it is true that the wreckage of the RMS Titanic revealed the part number of the propeller blade to be that of the Titanic, it is pretty fair to assume that while the Olympic was fitted the Titanic’s propeller, the Titanic was not fitted with the Olympic’s, after all, it was missing a blade. Therefore, the Titanic would also have had a propeller with its part number stamped on it. And while realizing this did take the wind out of my sails, it wasn’t like it hit an iceberg (sorry, I had to) There are plenty of other factors that may point to conspiracy with the two sister ships. And as promised, here are a few with some links attached to quench your thirst. That’s it for me my friends.

Can we remember not being in the moment?

These are strictly my thoughts and many questions. Perhaps one day I will have the time and inclination to see what scientific studies say about this, if there are any.

My main question is…. Will I remember more if I spend more time in the present? Or the reverse…. Can I remember specific parts in my past when I was not in the moment?

This question all started with a conversation with my sister Jo. She was telling me about how hearing a song brought her intensely back to a time when she was young. Emotions and feelings came with this memory, who she was with, what they were doing, etc, etc. She was snapped right back to that moment in time when she was listening to that song before. We talked about how smells and other triggers can also do this. So I asked her if she thought she would have been able to have those memories if she wasn’t “present” at the time. Jo found this as intriguing as I did, so we explored that question a little further.

This has been a topic of conversation in our family before; maybe that’s why this was so interesting to us. My mom took a sort of self helpy course in the late 80’s and she came home talking about how she was “internal”. This was the way they would describe not being in the moment back then I guess. Nowadays I think they say you are “in your head”. So….., mom was learning about being present and would go around apologizing when she wasn’t listening or paying attention saying, sorry dear I must have been internal. It became kind of an inside joke about mom being internal. Later in life I remember dad giving me advice to stay in the moment. Funny how relevant that simple advice was, looking back on it now. I am sure that I underestimated it back then and can only hope that it stuck in my subconscious somehow. Or maybe I was following it without really realizing it. But now after truly tying to practice this along with meditation I am realizing how powerful this advice was.

mindfulness image

Back to the original somewhat vague question, which really just lead me to many more….. It may seem obvious but if Jo was internal, in her head, daydreaming or whatever you want to call it would she have been able to recall that moment many years later. Can we access memories of the past when we were not being present?  Or, maybe it’s not black and white and it depends on how focused you are. It seems to me though that my past memory would be much stronger if I was in the moment. If I am worrying about the past or future would I be able to remember that as strong as if I was fully present. It makes me think of those flashback memories on the silver screen. Vivid video type images of a past event…. sometimes that seems to really happen to us. Maybe the intensity of that video type memory has to do with how focused or “in the moment” (or even emotional?)  we were at the time.

Maybe I am biased now but it seems like my memory – now to think of it, it’s not like factual statistical recall memory but more like experiential memory seems to have improved over the past few years since trying to practice mindfulness meditations, etc.

When I think back to times of greater unawareness in my life the memory seems vague or blurry, sometime just plain missing. Granted that could also be due to external things like alcohol or drugs.

Many of us have experienced this while driving, where all of a sudden you realize you are 20 minutes into your drive and you can’t remember anything along the way. We have just been subconsciously driving. Fast forward 20 years and where do those 20 minutes go. Is it available to our conscious memory? Is it somewhere buried deep inside? It is just as easy to access as if we were in the moment during that 20 min drive? What would we be able to access from it anyway…. some day-dream of future or past events? Does that “internal” part of our life disappear?

Does one’s level of awareness have any correlation to quality of memory? Can we create more memory or are we always maxing out? Talking to my sister again about this and funny enough we both remember exactly where we were driving while discussing this originally. She also made an interesting point about being “in the zone”,  “the pocket” or “void” whatever you wish to call that space where time slows down and you instinctively create. Basically super focused, usually while playing sports, performing arts, or creating something. She figures she can’t remember details while in the zone but will remember more during conversations with people. I understand what she means but I don’t think I can say the same. I do feel that stuff happens automatically while in the zone but I seem to remember it the same as generic experiences in the present.

I find these questions fascinating and maybe will try experimenting a bit with it, or at least be aware of it and see if anything changes. I know that as it stands I still forget way too much!!

Thanks for reading,

When a loved one passes the pain and sorrow that it causes is immeasurable; especially when that love one is a child.  Often, we have loved ones cremated and spread their ashes among an area where our dearly departed cherished.  But what happens when that area doesn’t allow you to do such a thing?  Well, as one woman reportedly did (as reported by CNN as well), you dump the ashes anyway.  The location of this was none other than the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World (WDW).  As the story goes this woman lost a 7 year old son whose favorite ride was the Haunted Mansion at WDW.  She approached Disney and asked if she would be allowed to scatter the remains there, to which Disney replied negatively citing that it is against the law to do so. (Disney actually gets these requests about twice a year and there is an untold number that may spread the remains without ever asking, though Disney officially says there is no definitive proof anyone has done this.)   Not feeling satisfied with WDW’s decision, the woman spread her sons ashes along the ride regardless and since then there have been a number of rather chilling reports surrounding the ride.

This photo was taken by a woman with a night vision lens as she was documenting the ride for a WDW virtual visit.  She did not notice this photograph until later that night when she was looking through the pictures.  She was rightfully startled when she noticed this and reports that there was no person of this age within 20 feet of her while in line.  Clearly this child is seen only a few cars in front of her and would have been easily seen while standing in line.  Perhaps more oddly though is why the child seems to be looking right at her when this particular part of the ride is shrouded in darkness and the camera used no flash (remember this was taken with a night vision lens).  Separate from this account many have reported seeing a child running around in the ballroom section of the ride, some have claimed to see a crying child at the exit of the ride who seems to ignore the inquiring guest when they ask to help, and one ride attendant even claimed to hear a child’s laughter coming from the interior of the ride, followed shortly by glimpses of something from the corner of her eye, and the feeling of a hand on her shoulder.    Perhaps it’s appropriate that the Haunted Mansion may actually be haunted.

This is just a single report of spooky happenings in the worlds happiest place.  The truth is however that there are more reports throughout the park from everyday people who claim to have seen apparitions.  One woman claims to have seen two cowboys vanish before her eyes by the Golden Horseshoe, another worker claims to have caught an apparition on video which can be seen here:

There are also numerous other reports from apparitions being seen on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride cameras but not by the naked eye, the exclusive Club 33, and Tom Sawyers Island where there are reports of children running around the island when the park is closed.  When employees go to escort them off premises they are nowhere to be found.  These are only a small number of places that have reported paranormal activity.

This story can’t be complete without at least mentioning the stories of Walt Disney himself still haunting the location, most notably his old apartment above the fire station.  Imagine the shock of one WDW employee as she was dusting the old apartment and the lights that she continued to turn off would repeatedly turn back on.  On her final trip up to turn the lights off she claims the voice of Disney himself was heard saying “Don’t forget, I am still here.”  To this day the lights are left on in his apartment.

Though WDW refuses to admit that the remains of loved ones are spread throughout the park, there are many eye witness accounts and visual evidence that says there may be something going on down there.  In a place where some of the happiest memories in a person’s lifetime are had, isn’t it safe to say the park would hold a lot of spiritual energy that could be manifested throughout the area.  The memories that are made at WDW everyday are burned into the minds of those that have experienced them.  It is just as likely that the energy of those that have experienced WDW are burned into the park as well.  Apparitions and residual energy from people all over time and Earth collide in one location for all eternity.  It really is “A small world after all”

Believe it or not, as with most things controversial, this is still a touchy topic in some circles. Being from Washington State, the closely approaching twentieth anniversary of the death of one of grunge’s most prolific icons has stirred up some whispers in some of those circles that I myself am a part of. Now these whispers have always been there and in all fairness, they’re not all whispers. Some have been shouted loud and clear but I guess it all comes down to who’s listening. I of course am talking about the untimely demise of the late, great Kurt Cobain. And before we go any further, yes. I know ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ is a David Bowie song. I just found the title fitting.

Insert Joke Here…

Unlike most conspiracies that have yet to be proven, this one really only has the one theory. Kurt Cobain didn’t take his own life in the apartment above his garage of his Seattle home on April 5th, 1994, but rather he was murdered. The theory states that his wife, Courtney Love, hired a hit man while she was in another state to do the “job” giving her an allay, this is the main alternative to the official cause of death reported on Cobain’s death certificate which is suicide. This theory is widely accepted as being started by a man named Tom Grant. Grant was hired by Love as a private investigator to find her husband after he had left rehab. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s start a little further back in time.

We’re not gonna have enough road to make it to 88 miles an hour.

In what has become popularly referred to as “the Rome Incident’, Kurt Cobain was visiting his family who was in Rome at the time the month before his death. As the story goes, during an interview that Cortney Love gave to Select Magazine, Love pulled out a bottle of Rohypnol and after taking several of the pills, placed them on the table. The label on the bottle named her as the one the drugs were prescribed to. Hours later, Love telephoned the front desk of the hotel they were staying at asking for an ambulance claiming that Cobain was unresponsive. She claims that after she woke up, she found Kurt stooped over a table, bleeding from his nose, later note the table in front of him and a wad of cash in his hand. Despite the advice of the doctors, Love had Cobain transferred to an American hospital. Love told Rolling Stone,

He took 50 pills. He probably forgot how many he took. But there was a definite suicidal urge, to be gobbling and gobbling and gobbling.

A statement that was later refuted by Dr. Osvaldo Galletta, who treated Cobain after the incident. In fact, at the time of the incident, Cobain, Love and Galletta all stated that the overdose was accidental. Galletta also denied Love’s claim that 50 pills were pumped from Cobain’s stomach and that his stomach wasn’t pumped at all and that there was no way in knowing how many pills Cobain had taken. It is also important to note that Galletta stated,

We can usually tell a suicide attempt,” adding: “He did not seem like a young man who wanted to end it all.

A few things about ‘The Rome Incident’ that should be pointed out: There was never an explanation given for Kurt’s bloody nose. There was no way of Love knowing how many pills Cobain ingested unless she witnessed or administer the pills being taken; but by the same token, we have no way of knowing how many pills had been taken and we also have no way of knowing if Love’s statement was that of a worried, panicked spouse or that of a person who preemptively gave a statement expecting an outcome of which they had insider knowledge of. It is true that it was Love who alerted emergency responders, but it has been asserted that she waited anywhere between thirty minutes up to an hour before doing so, although I couldn’t find any supporting evidence of the claim. Dr. Osvaldo Galletta also hinted toward Love’s “timely intervention”. Some people have drawn a connection with the fact that Kurt was holding a wad of cash in his hand and that money was found along with his body. As for the note that was found with him, Love supposedly tried to give it to Seattle Police after Kurt’s death for comparison with the suicide note found with Kurt’s body and claims she was told by Sgt. Cameron, lead detective of Cobain’s death, that the note would only cause here trouble and that she should get rid of it. She admits that in it, it mentioned Kurt wanting to leave here. She also admits to burning the Rome note. Okay, let’s jump back ahead in time.

Great Scott! He used the same joke twice!

In the interest of keeping your attention, without leaving out too much detail, allow me to present the scene. On April 1st, 1994, Kurt Cobain jumped a wall of a rehab center in Marina Del Rey, California. On April 3rd of that year, Courtney Love hired private investigator, Tom Grant, to find her husband. Love stated that she didn’t know where he was and asked Grant to stake out a few places she thought he might go including known drug dealers. She seemed be trying to avoid him checking their Lake Washington home until later. On the eighth of April, electrician Gary Smith, found Cobain’s body in the apartment above the garage of the Lake Washington home. Smith was there to install security lights on the request of Love. Found on the scene was a cigar box containing heroin paraphernalia, a suicide note written on the back of an IHOP placemat stabbed through the soil of an overturned house plant with a pen, some personal effects including his wallet, sunglasses, cigarettes, and cash. Also at the scene was found the body of Kurt Cobain with a shotgun wound to his head and the shotgun on his chest, his left hand still clutching it.

The Suspicions

There are a few things that have risen suspicions with Cobain’s death. Fingerprints on the shotgun were not taken until May 9th of that year. They yielded no fingerprints with the exception of four that were deemed ineligible. The officers had to pry the shotgun out of Cobain’s hands and this could have led to smudging of the fingerprints but to find zero others is odd. The coroner’s report stated that Cobain had three times the lethal dose of heroin in his body at the time of his death which has led to people stating that Cobain wouldn’t have been able to pull the trigger let alone put the drugs away, roll his sleeve back down and then pull the trigger. Others have argued that it would all depend on his tolerance level which, given his past with drug abuse, was higher than normal. Then we have Love hiring Tom Grant, which according to Grant, was Love’s way of “covering her bases” by which he meant, she did it to give the appearance of the worried wife. She hired him to find her husband which she claimed not to know the whereabouts of. This is refuted by a statement given by their male nanny Cali, who told Love before Cobain’s death that he ran into Cobain at the Lake Washington house and had a conversation. Her not knowing the whereabouts of her husband is also called into question after the phone records and messages of the hotel Love was staying at the time was reviewed and it was found that Cobain had left a message for Love that included a number as to where he can be reached. Finally, if it was not for Love’s request for installation of security lights at the Lake Washington home, who knows how long it would have been for Cobain’s body to have been found. It has been asserted that Love wanted Cobain’s body to be found so that the first album from her band Hole that was set to release a week later, would rocket in sales.

So what motive would Love have for Cobain’s death? It is said that Cobain had contacted Rosemary Carroll who was Cobain’s attorney to take Love out of his will. He died before this could happen. If Cobain had divorced Love, she would have gotten at best only half of Cobain’s money. With his death, she got all of it and now has rights to the songs as well.

I have to admit, looking into this has gotten me a little depressed and I will end this post on this; if you want to look into this more, there are many sites on the web and plenty of videos on Youtube to watch. A supposed proposition from Love to a man to kill Cobain for $50,000 who died shortly after an interview where he stated this. There is also a documentary call Kurt and Courtney that is available on Netflix instant. Regardless of what happened, Kurt Cobain was for a brief time, the voice of a generation. We should treat him as such.
