In 2153, cancer was cured. In 2189, AIDS. And in 2235, the last members of the human race traveled to a far distant planet called Pearl to begin the next chapter of humanity. Several hundred years after their arrival, the remainder of humanity lives in a utopian colony in which every want is satisfied automatically, and there is no need for human labor, struggle or thought. But when the machines that regulate the colony begin to malfunction, the colonists are faced with a test for the first time in their existence. With the lives of the colonists at stake, it is left to a young man named Samuel to repair these breakdowns and save the colony. Aided by his friend Penny, Samuel rises to meet each challenge. But he soon discovers a mysterious group of people behind each of these problems, and he must somehow find and defeat these saboteurs in order to rescue his colony.

Fractals and the implication they may be at the heart of existence has been weighing on my thoughts.

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary a fractal is “any of various extremely irregular curves or shapes for which any given part is similar in shape to a given larger or smaller part when magnified or reduced to the same size”.

I wonder if the universe could be a fractal of infinite complexity experiencing itself and consciousness is the manifestation of this focus within the infinite godmind. Now here is where I am stepping completely into conjecture and whoo whoo hippie purple land. Our universe has a mathematical stamp impregnated in all things referred to as the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34 etc.) a ratio that’s mathematics shape the rotation of DNA, the spiral of galaxies, a snails shell, the geometry of leaves; in essence the flavor of our universe. If other universes exist they may be numerous or each a unique fractal. Is any part of our existence an interaction between fractals? Stephen Hawking describes membrane universes interacting causing the creation of new universes in his book “The Universe in a Nutshell” My brain spins and melts into infinity when I think of the popular theory that each black hole might lead to a unique universe filled with an infinite number of black holes. Now let’s just send the wonky thought experiment into hyper drive. What if technology is a manifestation of our fractal universe and has its own drive reflective of the will of man? I see technology as a force in the universe expanding out from the super organism of mankind much like a wave propagates from a boats bow. Technology sees only the destination not the path it carves; it is a yin to our yang. Humans have heart and can guide the technological will of the universe. I automatically want to conquer the great question of light vs dark, good vs evil, matter vs anti-matter and I can’t help but think about entropy.

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary 2b, Entropy is “the degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity”.

Ultimately without consciousness a fractal will naturally balance.

If you have read “The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield” you may appreciate this cherry. Resistance is consciousness expressing entropy.

So what does any of this mean? Heaven might just be a fractal that’s scale tipped to yang 🙂

The thought of living in a simulated reality is, in my opinion, both intensely intriguing and frighteningly possible.  Of course this possibility that everything around us is an encoded virtual representation would peak any science fiction fans interest whether it was created by some all knowing architect or a random ancient system floating through the ether, I often find myself staring at an object and, embarrassingly enough, trying to picture its code or make it dissolve. Luckily I haven't gone as far as attempting to stop a bullet, but one can dream.  

	While I admit the world of video games are pretty foreign to me, the level of artistic and technological accomplishment has never ceased to amaze me.  I enjoyed Chrono Trigger as much as the next person but nowadays my lack of time, and even more impressive lack of funds prevent me from partaking.  However, the other day I was watching one of my good friends play one of the more recent Grand Theft Auto games and while I was observing in awe the sheer vastness and beauty of this digital world, a few things started striking me in a way which I have, and will, ponder over for some time.  While I was blown away by what I was witnessing and probably annoying my friend with a million questions about the game it started to occur to me that this incredible feat of human ingenuity was gradually making my opinion on the likelihood of our world being a simulated reality shift from possible, to probable.

	It all started when my friend whom i’ll refer to as Tony, boarded a helicopter.  Again, from the moment I started watching I was overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of this computer programmed world, but once he started climbing in elevation I started piecing together similarities between the two worlds in front of me.  I saw an area which I assumed to be downtown.  As Tony veered to the right, the downtown area, as in real life, started veering off to the left until it was behind him.  Eventually when he came back around, there it was again, and I realized this vast virtual world followed certain programmed rules of spatial relationships and no matter what Tony does this seems to hold true.  Just as in real life I can look at a building, walk around the block and it will be there when I return.  So I started realizing this huge virtual world was in fact just digital code or data that follows different algorithms or rules.  I then realized when Tony started lowering his elevation, the ground or streets started gaining more and more detail, again such as in real life, the closer he was to an object, these algorithms produced more, or different data revealing finer details which were not there before.  It all comes back to these real world conundrums such as “if there is nobody present to hear a tree fall” and “does the inside of the tree exist before you cut it open?” as proposed by one of my favorite simulated universe theorists Jim Elvidge.

	When he eventually landed and disembarked from the helicopter I noticed all the digital representations of people who were reacting to his presence and what was happening in front of them.  Again this struck me as data, which was programmed to react to certain things such as Tony himself, or environmental obstacles, or different actions such as a car intersecting or a grenade thrown their way.  Once I started viewing these digital people as such, I started wondering; were they still going about their business in the same fashion when he was in the helicopter and he couldn't see them?    Did the downtown exist when it was not in view?  Part of me thought yes because of the rules of spatial relations in this digital world, but then I thought it would probably be way more efficient for things to, in fact, not exist until the player’s line of sight called for it.  I wondered, do these encoded “people” who seemingly were going about their encoded “lives” know they are just codes programmed to jump out of Tony’s way when he drives toward them?  It also struck me that, upon confrontation, some were encoded to fight back and others to run away.  Does this translate to personality traits?  Imagine my shock when one pulled out their phone to take a picture of Tony and another called the police, who were in fact notified and eventually arrived.  It all hurt my non-tech brain.  

	Finally my skepticism returned and I started reminding myself, if Tony traverses this world in a straight line indefinitely, no matter how vast the digital world it will eventually end.  Very promptly I realized the solution to that problem was to make your world spherical.  Furthermore if he increased his elevation until he left that sphere he could enter a different set of spacial data with different algorithms such as a vacuum with no gravity.  To make it even better lets make that vacuum a giant void where the closest object is so far away it would be unrealistic for anything to travel there.  It seemed pretty convenient to me.  

	Then I started thinking about what comes next.   The obvious progression would be size of space, visual detail, and intricacy of algorithms, all of which are continuously being developed and improved upon.  Given the whole exponential growth of technology argument, it seems that a digital world indistinguishable from our own will definitely exist within our lifetime.  This logic sounded strange to me.  It felt highly unlikely that given the vastness of space and specifically time, if it is in fact vast, we would presently be on the cusp of such a creation.  In fact, it is much more likely we would have achieved such a thing before.  Maybe once, or perhaps millions of times over.  The likelihood of a digital cage within a digital cage creating a cycle of technological evolution is more and more prevalent to me and in fact makes me question the nature of our reality constantly.

	Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom argues civilization either A) never reaches this level of technology B) does in fact reach a technological level in which we are capable but for whatever reason do not create an indistinguishable simulation (ie. civilization ends or chooses not to) or C) it has in fact been developed and we are almost certainly living inside a simulation currently.  I would argue we are presently on the cusp so A is highly unlikely.  I doubt we would create the technology and decide not to use it given the history of scientific progression.  We could definitely be erased from this equation entirely but to argue whether or not this will happen is trivial.  So I am left with either we die, or were already ensnared in a vast illusion of data. 
   
	While I'm sure there are many people shaking their heads in disgust at my lack of knowledge involving codes and algorithms the fundamental ideas hold true.  What I was witnessing in this “game” was indeed a prophetic glimpse into a man-made world in which a digital sunset is just as breathtaking as our own.  A world where interactions have identical consequences and digital people decide what course of action best suits their interests.  When a digital person runs for cover amidst a violent firefight is it not for their own survival?  Even if one was programmed to do so would that encoded being know?  Where does our deep down “natural” instinct of self preservation truly originate?  Perhaps we truly are on the precipice of creating a virtual prison, in which case we are in a damn special time. However with our understanding of the reality in which we live, or lack there of, it is not so far fetched to believe in the possibility of a world consisting of simply data and algorithms, especially when such a thing can be purchased in any moment we choose for a mere $69.99.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon. EVP’s. The supposed captured, disembodied voices of the passed-on. The audible recording of the deceased. The dead. Much like how with the advent of the camera ushered in the advent of ghost photography, shortly after Edison’s phonograph, came the claims of capturing ghostly voices. So before we go any further, let’s establish what exactly the EVP hypothesis is. To make this as simple as possible, an EVP is an intentional or unintentional sound recorded on analog or electronic devices that are interpreted as those belonging to the dead or from the past. I include “from the past” because in some EVPs, other ambient noises that are deemed relevant to the particular situation or question asked, can be heard sometimes in congruence with or in absence of a “voice”. Sounds like water where there isn’t a source near or the sounds of battle and cannon fire when there is none. So let’s go over a very brief history of recorded, supposed discarnate noise.

It’s either saying, “In the beginning of the history of EVPs…” or “Windmill.” It’s hard to say…

 

EVPs are part of a broader claimed phenomena known as Instrumental Trans-Communication, or ITC. This includes communication with the dead through radio, computers, video camera, telephone, television and as mentioned above, photography. Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in the late 1800’s and it is often sited that he was working on a device that would make it easier to communicate with deceased persons. Some skeptics will say that his claim of working on a device to communicate with the passed-on is misinterpreted and exaggerated, and in fact all he said was that such device “could” be made and that he was never actually actively working on one. This is most likely attributed to an interview Mr. Edison gave with Scientific American (which is available for a price on PDF here) in which he said:

 

it is possible to construct an apparatus which will be so delicate that if there are personalities in another existence or sphere who wish to get in touch with us in this existence or sphere, this apparatus will at least give them a better opportunity to express themselves than the tilting tables and raps and ouija boards and mediums and the other crude methods now purported to be the only means of communication.

 

But what most people who say that Edison was working on such a device are referring to an interview he gave to American Magazine titled “Edison Working On Way to Communicate With the Next World” in which he said:

 

If the apparatus I am now constructing should provide a channel for the inflow of knowledge from the unknown world – a form of existence different from that of this life – we may be brought an important step nearer the fountainhead of all knowledge, nearer the intelligence which directs all.

 

He then added:

 

But, mind you, I am not promising results. All I promise is that I will make it easier than it has ever been heretofore for personalities who have ‘passed on’ to communicate with us, if they are so circumstanced that they can or want to communicate with us.

 

So Edison aside, another prominent person of interest in the research of EVPs is one Konstantīns Raudive. So prominent was Raudive’s work that EVPs are sometimes referred to as Raudive voices. Raudive was a parapsychologist who, after reading Friedrich Jürgenson’s book Voices from Space, became greatly interested in the phenomena. Jürgenson himself, is often regarded as “the father of EVP” and is credited for discovering the phenomena. Raudive’s disembodied voice has said to make contact from beyond the grave as well via phone call.

 

There have been devices created that are supposed to help in spirit communication via EVP. The Frank’s Box or Ghost box is a device that supposedly allow spirits to splice radio signals to produce answers to questions given. Another nifty piece of technology doesn’t necessarily allow for communication to passed on humans but it actually determines if what is recorded IS a human voice. Praat is one such software. This link will take you to the site where you can download the free software and read the manuals of its function. Most of which is beyond my understanding. But those of you so inclinded…

 

So what are we to make of these claims of communication from the next plane of existence? There are many explanations for how these sounds can make it to audio tape or electronic devices. Cross modulation is one of these reasons. It is basically interference with radio or TV signals that can leave audio imprints on magnetic tape. It can also leave imprints on electronic recordings. While most believers of this phenomena will argue that the recordings in question are done in a solitary space and that the answers given are relevant to questions asked, it could be argued that given the hypothetical state of a spirit, that one could simply place a blank tape on a table without a recording device and ask questions and relevant responses should be given. But despite this perceived relevance of the question or circumstance, cross modulation happens. In an episode of Ecto-Radio, hosted by the founding members of the Southwest Ghost Hunters Association, the two host recall an instance where they were investigating the infamous Boothill Cemetery in Tombstone, AZ. Now the SGHA is a smart bunch and have an intricate knowledge of Tombstone’s history and were well aware that there probably wasn’t anybody buried at a gravestone that claimed that the person buried there had been hung, so you can imagine their surprise when they played back their recording to find a “response” saying. “If you’re going to hang a man, you better look at him.” After the initial excitement wore off, they realized that what had been recorded sounded very familiar. In fact, it was a line spoken by Clint Eastwood in the movie “Hang ‘Em High” which was being aired at the time in question. Like I said, SGHA is a smart bunch and they quickly realized this as nothing more but irony.

 

Another explanation given for these sounds is audible pareidolia, which is basically the brain looking for patterns. Other explanations include audio artifacts, meteor showers which the tails of meteors can reflect and distort radio waves, and hoaxes. One thing that I found interesting about EVPs are that most are indecipherable until someone tells you what they think its saying. Then the message becomes very clear. I will keep this post short since it was meant as another Halloween blog that is coming out a day late. But who says spookiness is designated for October alone? I will leave you that in my opinion, and this is just the opinion of a Fortean blogger, there is not enough scientific data to suggest that what is being recorded on devices is anything more than pareidolia. And this opinion is coming from someone who would indulge in such evidence of life after death. But the proof just isn’t in the pudding. I will also leave you, my audience with some EVPs that I either found chilling or convincing, just not convincing enough. Like the saying goes, keep an open mind but not so open your brain falls out.
